Great typewriter or the greatest typewriter?
Some days you just need to focus on some simple things, like some beautifully engineered writing iron.
So, here's a fantastic long-carriage, senatorial typeface (square-ish small-cap-ish type), Olympia SM9. Possibly the best “portable” typewriter ever made.
What makes it so great? Perfect touch. Smooth action. Easy maintenance. Features galore.
It's more than a little huge. So I don't recommend lugging it far. It's wider than most 1920s and 30s desktops and almost as heavy.
There's nothing simple about this machine. It is precise engineering and carefully designed at the end of decades of innovation and development. But it makes the whole thing feel simple. And that is a beautiful thing.
